A new jail to replace two North Seattle family businesses?
Last week the city announced 4 possible locations for a new city jail to house misdemeanor prisoners, and each location is controversial in its own way. So…making the rounds of the four - here’s a North Seattle Herald Outlook report on the concerns about the Aurora site option.
The Aurora option would replace the 58-year old Puetz Golf Range and Pro Shop and an adjoining Lincoln Towing yard with a low-rise jail. Personally, the Driving range seems like a nice business to have on Aurora, and it provides a nice addition to a neighborhood that needs the help.

I’ve not read whether Seattle is going to eminent domain the Puetz space or whether they are looking to sell. Does anyone know?
David - I met with one of the consultants working on the jail. He told me that it is City preference to not use eminent domain, especially on this project. I was under the understanding that they would not name a site as potential unless they had already discussed the possible acquisition with the landowner and they felt that they could secure the property. The article makes it sound like Puetz was surprised. I wonder if the person interviewed just had not been in the loop. Or, if the land is owned by another party.
[…] North Seattle has already stated its position, and now SW Seattle’s Highland Park has put together a nice response to the two different locations being considered for their neighborhood. I’ve got to say, they’ve done a nice job of gathering letters, putting together action items for the neighborhood, and even naming the communications firm the city has hired to help promote the jail (here’s my idea - ‘free complimentary pat-down with every stay’) […]
