Ballard Denny’s declared a landmark, now what.
Last night the Denny’s in Ballard was declared a landmark by the Landmarks Preservation Board. Previously scheduled to be demolished in place of condos, the building now appears like it will be saved.
Kudos to the neighbors who worked to save it, but now comes the really interesting part - what to do with this building and land?

There’s no reason the Benaroya family can’t just let this building sit for the next 100 years. It’s a wood building that will eventually be in such disrepair (if it isn’t getting close already) that it will need to be demolished for safety reasons. Until it reaches that point this will be a huge eye sore for the Ballard neighborhood for years to come, right at the gateway. I’m sure the family will be appealing the decision anyways.
Kinda reminds me of the Kalakala - everyone wanted to save it, but nobody has a plan how exactly that will work.
Why not make the Denny’s into the Nordic Heritage Museum? Then the Museum would have parking. Since the Museum rents the building they are in from the school district wouldn’t it be nice to have a permanent one story builing for the Museum? Besides it looks like a Viking Hat.
